Background & Challenge

Elisa Viihde is the most popular digital entertainment hub service in Finland. A major part of my work at Elisa Viihde focused on the design of the Elisa Viihde Plus -product, launched in 2023, and the further development of it in 2024. The service was designed by a multidisciplinary team, while my main responsibilities were the visual design of the user interface, as well as usability and accessibility. As part of the design process, I also facilitated co-design workshops.

In addition to interface design, I contributed to several other areas of the project. These included supporting the Google certification process for the Android-based set-top box and Android TV launcher, evaluating the opportunities and limitations of technical solutions such as code libraries, and creating selected marketing materials.

An important part of the project was designing how the graphical user interface would be used with a remote control. I also contributed to the procurement process for the set-top box and remote control, and designed the box together with the OEM.

Visual Identity

I was the lead UI designer for the Elisa Viihde Plus product. My designs built on the existing Elisa Viihde products and design language, while also taking into account the constraints of the Android TV framework used for the interface.

The design was a collaborative effort. I led the design of the user interface, including its overall visual direction, most views and components, and the design documentation. The Design Manager developed parts of the main navigation together with stakeholders, while another designer contributed to selected views and user flows.

Below are examples of the type scale I designed (partly omitted), along with documentation for selected UI components.

Visualizing Flows

I also created a large number of user flows and interaction diagrams for user interfaces and hardware, including the remote control. These were used to communicate the intented user paths to developers and testers.

An example of one of these flows is shown below. The original flow was created in Figma as an interactive document, so only a small section is shown here.

This flow visualizes the use of back button in the remote control. The back button has several different uses/ functionalities, depending on where the user is in the interface, so it required extensive flow visualization and testing.
